How to Store Peptides Properly
Improper storage is one of the most common ways researchers waste money on peptides. The rules differ significantly between lyophilised (unmixed) peptides and reconstituted solutions — and getting it wrong can degrade a compound before it ever reaches its target. This guide covers everything: pre- and post-reconstitution, freezing, light exposure, travel, and how to identify a compromised vial.

Reconstituted solution window (in BW)
Lyophilised peptides are freeze-dried powders sealed in vials. They are significantly more stable than reconstituted solutions and more forgiving of temperature excursions.
Room temperature is acceptable short-term
Lyophilised (freeze-dried) peptides are shelf-stable at room temperature for days to weeks. Shipping does not degrade them.
Refrigerate for medium-term storage (1–6 months)
Store at 2–8°C (standard refrigerator) in the back of the fridge — not in the door, which experiences temperature swings when opened.
Freeze for long-term storage (6+ months)
Lyophilised peptides can be stored at -20°C for years without significant degradation. Wrap vials in foil or keep in a dark container.
Avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles
Even for lyophilised peptides, repeatedly cycling between freezer and room temperature accelerates degradation. Decide your storage plan before ordering large quantities.
Protect from light
UV light degrades peptide bonds. Store in amber vials or wrapped in foil. Most quality suppliers use amber glass — keep it that way.
Keep away from moisture
Lyophilised peptides are hygroscopic — they absorb atmospheric moisture, which can accelerate degradation. Keep caps sealed until ready to reconstitute.
Critical difference from lyophilised peptides
Once reconstituted, peptides are in solution and degrade significantly faster. The rules change completely — do not freeze, keep refrigerated, and use within 4–6 weeks.
Refrigerate only — do not freeze
Once reconstituted in bacteriostatic water, peptides should be kept at 2–8°C. Freezing a reconstituted solution can denature the peptide structure and cause aggregation.
Use bacteriostatic water (BW), not sterile water
Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative, extending solution life to 4–6 weeks. Sterile water has no preservative and should only be used if the entire vial will be drawn immediately.
4–6 week window for most peptides
In BW at 4°C, most peptides remain stable for 4–6 weeks. After this window, potency degrades — discard and reconstitute fresh.
Do not shake — roll gently
Shaking a reconstituted vial creates bubbles and mechanical shear forces that can damage peptide structure. Roll the vial gently between your palms to mix.
Draw from the side, not through bubbles
When drawing with a syringe, tilt the vial and draw from the liquid pool rather than pulling through foam at the surface.
Keep at the back of the fridge, not the door
Temperature fluctuations from door opening affect stability. The back of the bottom or middle shelf is the most stable location.
Cloudiness or turbidity
A clear reconstituted solution that becomes cloudy indicates precipitation or bacterial contamination. Do not use.
Visible particulates / floaters
Undissolved particles suggest protein aggregation or contamination. Discard even if the rest of the solution looks clear.
Colour change
Most peptide solutions are colourless or very faintly straw-coloured. Yellow, brown, or any distinct colour indicates oxidation or contamination.
Unusual smell
Fresh bacteriostatic water has a mild benzyl alcohol scent. Any foul, ammonia-like, or otherwise unusual odour indicates degradation or contamination.
Frothing when drawing
Some frothing can occur from normal surface tension. Excessive foam that doesn't dissipate may indicate protein aggregation.
