Glutathione (γ-L-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine, GSH) is a tripeptide antioxidant synthesized in virtually every cell of the body. It was first isolated in 1888 by J. de Rey-Pailhade and characterized fully in the 1920s–30s. Its role as the primary intracellular antioxidant and master detoxification molecule makes it one of the most studied biochemical compounds in medicine. Levels peak in youth and decline significantly with age, disease, and toxic exposures — making supplementation an attractive anti-aging and health optimization strategy.
Glutathione is the predominant intracellular reducing agent, protecting cells from oxidative damage by directly neutralizing reactive oxygen species and regenerating other antioxidants (vitamins C and E). Through the glutathione-S-transferase enzyme system, it conjugates to toxic metabolites for hepatic excretion — making it central to Phase II liver detoxification. It also plays critical roles in immune function, DNA synthesis, and mitochondrial health. GSH exists in reduced (active) and oxidized (GSSG) forms; the GSH:GSSG ratio is a marker of oxidative stress.

IV Glutathione in Liver Disease
Italian clinical trials in alcoholic non-cirrhotic liver disease patients showed significant improvements in liver enzyme profiles (AST, ALT, GGT) and histological markers of liver damage with IV glutathione treatment — providing clinical validation for its hepatoprotective role.
