    Thymosin Alpha-1 (Ta1) is a 28-amino-acid peptide naturally produced by the thymus gland, where it plays a role in T-cell maturation and immune regulation. It was first isolated by Allan Goldstein and colleagues at George Washington University in the 1970s during research on thymus-derived immune factors. The synthetic form (Thymalfasin, marketed as Zadaxin by SciClone Pharmaceuticals) has been approved in over 35 countries for hepatitis B, hepatitis C (as interferon adjunct), and as a vaccine adjuvant. It holds a unique position among research peptides as one of the few with extensive clinical validation.

    How It Works

    Thymosin Alpha-1 stimulates T-lymphocyte maturation, particularly Th1 cells responsible for cell-mediated immunity against intracellular pathogens and cancer cells. It upregulates MHC class I and II expression on antigen-presenting cells, enhancing immune recognition of viral and tumor antigens. It also modulates dendritic cell function and reduces T-regulatory cell activity that tumors use to evade immune detection — making it relevant for both infection defense and cancer immunotherapy adjunct use.

    COVID-19 Outcomes

    Retrospective Chinese studies and early clinical trials in COVID-19 patients treated with Thymosin Alpha-1 showed reduced mortality in severe cases, attributed to its ability to restore the Th1-mediated antiviral response which is often suppressed in severe COVID. These results generated significant international interest.
