    Oxytocin is one of the oldest known neuropeptides — a 9-amino-acid cyclic peptide synthesized in the hypothalamus and released from the posterior pituitary. It was first identified in the early 20th century and named from the Greek for 'swift birth' due to its role in labor contractions. Subsequent research revealed its profound role in social bonding, trust, pair bonding, maternal behavior, and a range of autonomic functions. It has been clinically used for decades in obstetric settings (as Pitocin) and more recently explored for psychiatric and behavioral applications.

    How It Works

    Oxytocin acts on G protein-coupled oxytocin receptors (OXTR) distributed throughout the brain, uterus, breast, cardiovascular system, and gastrointestinal tract. In the brain, it reduces amygdala reactivity to threatening stimuli, modulates social reward circuits, and promotes prosocial behavior. Peripherally, it acts on uterine smooth muscle (labor), mammary glands (milk ejection), and the cardiovascular system (mild vasodilation). Nasal administration delivers it across the blood-brain barrier more efficiently than systemic injection.
