Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro) developed by the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences as a derivative of the endogenous tetrapeptide Tuftsin (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg). Tuftsin is a naturally occurring immunomodulatory peptide produced by enzymatic cleavage of IgG antibodies in the spleen. Selank was designed with an additional Gly-Pro sequence to improve its stability and CNS penetration. It has been approved for use in Russia as an anxiolytic and nootropic agent, representing one of the few research peptides with actual regulatory approval in any jurisdiction.
Selank modulates GABA-A receptor function — explaining its anxiolytic effects — without the sedation or addiction potential of benzodiazepines. It also stimulates expression of BDNF and other neurotrophic factors, enhancing synaptic plasticity. Additionally, it modulates the immune system through effects on IL-6, IFN-γ, and T-cell activity — an unusual combination of anxiolytic and immunomodulatory action.
- Generalized anxiety disorder
- Stress and cortisol management
- Cognitive enhancement — attention, memory, and learning
- Immune modulation and infection resilience
- Depression adjunct therapy
- Nootropic applications for mental performance
Russian Clinical Approval
Selank is registered and approved in Russia as a medicinal preparation for anxiety disorders and asthenic conditions — providing a level of regulatory validation not found with most research peptides. Clinical trials supporting this approval showed significant anxiety reduction and improved quality of life metrics.
User Community Outcomes
Among the nootropic community, Selank consistently receives reports of clean, calm clarity — reduced anxiety without sedation or cognitive blunting. The common description is 'anxiolysis without sedation,' making it appealing for functional use during demanding cognitive tasks.
Synergy with Semax
The combination of Selank (anxiolytic) and Semax (stimulating nootropic) is widely reported as producing a balanced state of calm focus. The two peptides appear complementary — Semax enhances alertness while Selank manages any associated anxiety or overstimulation.
- Very limited Western regulatory scrutiny compared to pharmaceutical agents
- Nasal delivery bioavailability is variable between individuals and products
- Immune system modulation deserves caution in autoimmune conditions — enhanced immune responses could exacerbate certain conditions
- Long-term effects on GABA receptor function with prolonged use are understudied
- Interactions with benzodiazepines or other GABAergic drugs are a concern
- None reported commonly
