GHK-Cu (glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine:copper) was first identified in 1973 by Loren Pickart, who discovered it in human plasma albumin as the fraction responsible for promoting liver cell regeneration. Subsequent research revealed it declines significantly with age — from approximately 200ng/ml at age 20 to 80ng/ml at 60. Pickart's decades-long career was devoted to characterizing GHK-Cu's remarkably broad biological activity, from skin regeneration to gene expression regulation. It has since become one of the most researched cosmetic peptides in the skincare industry.
GHK-Cu works through multiple mechanisms simultaneously. It activates collagen synthesis by stimulating fibroblast production of collagen I, III, and IV. It promotes angiogenesis for improved wound vascularization. It modulates gene expression broadly — studies have identified GHK-Cu as upregulating over 30 anti-aging genes while downregulating inflammatory and disease-related genes. It also chelates copper and delivers it to enzymes requiring copper as a cofactor, supporting normal tissue metalloenzyme function.
